Greetings all! This was my newsletter many years ago. I enjoyed looking back and hope you will too. A true story!! Remembering Mom… This happened several years ago. Mother’s Day was rapidly approaching. I had purchased a gift for my mother—however; I told Frank that it would be really meaningful if he would pick out a gift for his mother. He agreed. A few days before Mother's Day, Frank came home with the gift. He was beaming with pride as he showed me what he had bought. He said to me, “I thought this was really pretty, and I thought that Mom could hang this on her living room wall.” I tried really hard not to let Frank see me laugh. After all he did what I asked him to do. However, he could see that my reaction wasn’t quite what he had expected. He asked, “What?” I said to him, “This really is pretty, but don’t you think that it is premature?” He asked, “What do you mean?” So, I took the beautiful, flowered wreath and its’ stand out of the box and told him, “Frank, this is a wreath for a grave!” We put the wreath back in the box and I bought his mother another gift. Oh, by the way, I never asked Frank to buy his mother a Mothers’ Day gift ever again! This reminded me of a story I once heard. A four-year-old and a six-year-old presented their Mom with a house plant for Mother’s Day. They had used their own money to buy the plant and she was thrilled. The older of them said with a sad face, “There was a bouquet that we wanted to give you at the flower shop. It was real pretty, but we didn’t have enough money to buy it. We thought that it was just perfect for you, because on the ribbon it said, ‘Rest in peace’ and you are always telling us that all you really want is just a little peace!” ***************** Lessons we learned from Mother… My Mother taught me LOGIC: “If you fall off that swing and break neck, you can’t go to the store with me.” More LOGIC: “If everyone else jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?” My Mother taught me MEDICINE: “If you don’t stop crossing your eyes, they’re going to stay that way.” My Mother taught me TO THINK AHEAD: “If you don’t pass your spelling test, you’ll never get a good job.” My Mother taught me TO MEET A CHALLENGE: “What were you thinking? Answer me when I’m talking to you…Don’t talk back to me!” My Mother taught me HUMOR: “When that lawn mower cuts off your feet, don’t come running to me!” My Mother taught me how to BECOME AN ADULT: “If you don’t eat your vegetables, you’ll never grow up.” My Mother taught me about GENETICS: “You’re just like your father.” My Mother taught me about my ROOTS: “Do you think you were born in a barn.” My Mother taught me about the WISDOM OF AGE: “When you get to be my age, you will understand,” or “I will explain it to you when you are old enough!” My Mother taught me about ANTICIPATION: “Just wait until your father gets home.” My Mother taught me about RECEIVING: “You are going to get it when we get home.” And the all-time favorite thing my mother taught me is JUSTICE: “One day you will have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you!” --Author Unknown **************** II Timothy 2:5: “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. We live in a materialistic world that says, “If you love me, you will buy me ….” (you can fill in the blank). It seems that it is the only way we know how to show our love. As I read this scripture, I was reminded of what is really important. Irregardless of what the world says, scripture tells us something different. The most important gift a mother can give her child is an example of a godly life. Notice I didn’t say a perfect life. For all of us mother’s that have failed at times and made mistakes (that includes all mothers, by the way) --if you gave or are giving your children an example of a godly mother, then you have made and are making a positive difference in your child’s life. It is my wish that every mother has a blessed and wonderful Mother’s Day. ...Diane **************** About a month ago, I made a resolution. Now that warmer weather is finally here, I decided to start walking in the hope of feeling better and shedding a few pounds. I figured a mile a day would be a good place to start, then increase the distance over time. After one month, I am up to 2 miles…TOTAL. That’s it, I’ve only walked twice. I’ve gone through all of the excuses: I’m too busy, it’s too cold, it’s too wet, and I’ve even used the old standby; I’m just too tired today—I’ll begin again tomorrow! Some people approach a Christian lifestyle like I approach (or avoid) exercising. We can use every excuse in the book to avoid commitment, but they are just that; excuses. I know if I stay committed to walking, I will be a healthier person physically. I also know that if I stay committed to Christ, I’ll be a healthier person spiritually. During the summer months it is so easy to be too busy for church, too busy to read God’s word and too busy to pray. Springtime, what better time to resolve to become the committed person God would have you be. Let’s all get healthier together! …Diane My how time flies!! Maybe this is the year I’ll keep my resolution!! ***************** I hope you enjoyed looking back. In His love, Diane |
